Lauryn Hill was born in East Orange (New Jersey) in 1975 and is a singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, and actress. She began her musical journey by singing with her family when she was a child. She made a breakthrough when she joined hip-hop group, The Fugees, and released 2 albums with them. The band split in 1997 after which she focused on her solo career which has produced 1 studio album, 1 live album, and 10 singles. The album (The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) earned Lauryn 11 Grammy Award nominations of which she won 5 for Best New Artist, Best R&B Song, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Album, and Album of the Year. It became the first hip hop record to win an Album of the Year Grammy and Lauryn became the first woman to win 5 Grammys in one night. The album also won a Billboard Music Award (for R&B Album of the Year) and Lauryn also won an American Music Award (for Best New Soul/R&B Artist), a Soul Train Award, and was nominated for a Brit Award (for Best International Female Solo Artist).
